Upcoming Peony Season
So, a new season is upon us, and we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the flowers.
We have been weeding, sweeping, cleaning, testing, organizing, spraying, and are forever hopeful for a bountiful and healthy harvest.
Mother Nature has been kind to us so far. We have had rain when we need it and sun when things were too cool. However, Alaska is not the easiest place to garden. It is mid June and our evenings are still in the 40's.
I am thankful for the opportunity to nurture the beautiful flowers with my two amazing kids. Their encouragement and joyfulness make it all worthwhile.
The anticipation of the season is always the hardest and the long hours spent in the field are the times when all of my worries surface. Will the flowers be ok? Will anyone buy them? Will the cooler work?
I have to push those aside and simply embrace each moment. Moments when I walk up the rows of rapidly growing flower buds, buzzing with bees enjoying their sappy nectar, the robins singing atop tall trees in the stillness of the dark wilderness.
These are the little moments that make it all worthwhile.
